Can I Remove Hard Inquiries Myself Without Paying a Credit Repair Company?

Short answer: Yes—if the inquiry is inaccurate, duplicated, unauthorized, or connected to identity theft. But neither you nor a credit repair company can legitimately force the removal of a current, verifiable inquiry that you authorized.

When you are trying to qualify for a mortgage, a hard inquiry is easy to blame. It is visible, it may affect your score, and the internet is full of “fast deletion” promises. The more important question is this: Is that inquiry really what is keeping you from qualifying?

For most consumers, one additional inquiry costs fewer than five FICO points. It can remain on a report for up to two years, while FICO generally considers inquiries from the previous 12 months. Removing one inaccurate inquiry may help, but it may not solve the issue that matters most to a mortgage lender.

Do not spend weeks working on the wrong item.

Can Your Hard Inquiry Be Removed?

Federal law allows you to dispute information you believe is inaccurate or incomplete. It does not give anyone the right to erase accurate information simply because it is inconvenient.

What happened?

What it may mean

You never applied or authorized access

The inquiry may be disputable; possible fraud should also be evaluated.

The same application appears twice

A documented duplicate may be correctable.

You knowingly authorized the application

An accurate inquiry generally cannot be removed.

A company name you do not recognize is not automatically fraud. A dealer or mortgage broker may have submitted your application through a bank whose legal name appears on the report. That is why disputing before identifying the source can waste time—or distract you from a more serious credit problem.

The Inquiry May Not Be the Real Mortgage Problem

Mortgage qualification depends on the full profile: payment history, balances, utilization, collections, recent late payments, debt-to-income ratio, and the lender’s scoring model. A hard inquiry may be visible, while a different item has far more influence.

This is the difference between general DIY credit repair and a focused credit repair for mortgage strategy. You can pull your reports and submit a dispute yourself for free. A professional review becomes valuable when you need to know which issue to prioritize, what evidence matters, and how the plan fits your homebuying timeline.

No legitimate credit repair service can guarantee a deletion, a fixed score increase, or mortgage approval. Federal law prohibits misleading claims and advance payment for agreed credit-repair services before they are fully performed. Texas also regulates credit services organizations and requires registration unless an exemption applies.

The Bottom Line

You may be able to challenge an inaccurate or unauthorized inquiry without paying anyone. But knowing that an item can be disputed is not the same as knowing whether it is the item preventing you from moving toward a mortgage.
